The Art of Loving
blog#293

I've been thinking about the conversation I had with a daughter who was concerned about her elderly parent, and I'd like to share some thoughts with you.
Just as our parents once insisted on educating us in their own way, often finding their greatest happiness in seeing us follow their guidance, I feel that, even in old age, they continue to need that same sense of control over their lives.
Perhaps the kindest thing a daughter can do is to allow her parent to lead their own life, even when their choices may seem misguided or contrary to their ownwell-being. Sometimes, preserving their sense of independence and dignity may matter more to them than making the choices we believe would be best for them.
Let them navigate this stage of life in the way they feel they must, while you remain present with love and patience. Perhaps this will bring greater peace and allow both of you to go through this chapter with fewer tensions and upheavals.
Sometimes, loving someone also means knowing when to guide and when to let go.
