Shadows of the Past

At forty years old, José is a tall, slender man whose physical body seems to shrink beneath the weight of his reality. He sits outside in the open air, lighting a cigarette despite being tethered to IV lines carrying his chemotherapy medication.
"I am not afraid to die," he tells me, his voice steady. "I am only afraid of the pain and the suffering."
Yet the heaviest weight he carries is not the physical anguish he endures today. It is the deep-seated burden of his childhood—years defined by neglect, disconnection, and emotional wounds that time never healed. His guarded, almost emotionless demeanor today feels less like coldness and more like a necessary shield. He has earned the right to be wary. Still, I find myself wondering what he hopes to gain by speaking these truths aloud, or whether, deep down, he is searching for an answer I cannot give him.
