How Are You Today?

It's a question I ask often—almost instinctively—no matter how quickly I size up the person in front of me. What surprises me is how frequently the answer comes in the form of a quick nod and a quiet, "I'm okay."
But are they really?
Saying you're okay when you're not might be a way of avoiding vulnerability—or it might be an act of quiet strength. Sometimes it means you're not ready to say more. Sometimes it means you've accepted that you're struggling, and you're choosing to carry it on your own terms. And that in itself can be a powerful, freeing step.
When I ask, I'm not just making conversation. I'm extending a hand, saying: I'm here. You can tell me whatever you feel safe sharing. Because the question isn't about small talk—it's about connection.
So, truly—how are you today?
